Letter From the Heart – August 2009

November 30, 2010

Well, The Mary and Dave Road Show once again took the “big box” out into the wild and were pummeled into submission. Dave likes to get me out of town once in a while, even if only for a few days to re-charge my batteries. And it’s always nice to be able to bring the “babies” (dogs), with us, especially our new addition, Sara Bea.  Since I absolutely love what I do, I always want to be in phone range in case something is needed. I know as Dave says, I am not the Pope or the President, but like those two, I too care about my people and my staff.

So this time we went just down to the Portage Valley. Fifty miles down the road. One of the places my phone will work. Not. It broke the first day and I could only receive calls. One place to enjoy the beautiful weather we have been having and sit by a campfire and just relax and read a bit. Or not. It rained steady for three days. A few times we caught Rudy trying to start the motor home and creep it out of the campground. So we came home…to relax. If we want stress we will try it again before the end of summer. Like Labor Day. That would be a fitting title for the trip.

As for the market, things are beginning to show signs of a turnaround. As you may have noticed, the stock market has been climbing up as of late which is traditionally a sign the economy will follow. In the more recent case, where housing is concerned, the NAR (National Association of Realtors) reports that single-family home sales rose 2.4 percent from May to June which is about the same pace as a year ago. Also, this is the third month in a row that sales of existing homes have risen. If inventories continue to decline, prices may stabilize in some areas by the end of this year. However, the median price was down 15% from a year ago. The upshot is the stock market is beginning to rise partially due to housing news that is positive, even though that news may be a mix of hard numbers and emotional anticipation.
